23 May Commit20 Day of Service
One of the core values behind the “Sun Valley Way” has always has been, and will always be, the people. This is what inspired the Commit20 Campaign one year ago and is the main motivation behind the Commit20 Day of Service. Sun Valley employees take one day off to use their talents to give back to organizations in need. On April 29th, the Sun Valley Landscaping team set out into the community to make an impact through donations of labor and material for five different nonprofits. Overall, Sun Valley was able to donate an estimated 50+ hours helping others in the community through the Commit20 Day of Service.
Four of the projects that took place were at the Heart Ministry Center, Together Inc.,The Salvation Army and Heartland Hope Ministry, all of which had weeds pulled and new mulch spread. The Heart Ministry Center was very appreciative of the day saying it was, “ helpful to have support to help those in need” and that, “ to have a place that looks nice, makes it more welcoming for people to come in and stop by” – Jim Clements.
The fourth and biggest of all projects took place at Kent Bellows Studio. Through the partnership of the Joslyn Art Museum and Kent Bellows Studio, which is an art mentoring program for high school students, Mikel Leader, Sun Valley Landscaping’s Nursery Manager, spent a year creating design proposals, organizing material donations, and meeting with both organizations to piece together all ends of the project. After a year of collaboration and planning, 7 Sun Valley employees spent over 8 hours building the small community garden that is now featured on the side of Kent Bellows Studio. The garden not only acts as space for students and community members, but the materials and labor were donated in memorial to a previous employee who had passed away earlier in the year.
